By 'touched' I mean, change the password, if the profile allows it you could change the password to itself alter user XXXXX identified by values 'YYYYYY' where YYYYY is the password from dbausers (10g or lower) or sys.user$ (11g or higher) note in 11g you might have to use the spare4 column instead of the password column.


  • The following statement causes a user's password to expire: ALTER USER user PASSWORD EXPIRE; If you cause a database user's password to expire with PASSWORD EXPIRE, then the user (or the DBA) must change the password before attempting to log in to the database following the expiration. Tools such as SQL.Plus allow the user to change the password on the first attempted login following the expiration.
  • Here are the steps to set the password not to expire for the Oracle database user. Here we are assuming that the user has been assigned with the default profile: SQL alter profile default limit passwordlifetime unlimited; Profile altered. SQL alter user scott identified by tiger; User altered.

1. Introduction

In this article, we’ll discuss root cause and solution for ORA-28001: the password has expired error in oracle.

2. ORA-28001 Cause

The error normally occurs when the password for your oracle database is expired and it must be changed.

Expiry happens when the password has reached the limit set in the PASSWORD_LIFE_TIME parameter of your Oracle user profile.

3. ORA-28001 Solution

The password of the user account must be reset for solving this error. To reset the account password the following query can be used.

If you are trying to access the database using SQL developer, then it will prompt you to enter a new password in order to change the expired password.

In case if the user account is also locked, it can be unlocked by following the steps here.

To prevent the password expiry of the Oracle user account, set the password life time to unlimited using the following query. (Requires DBA privilege)
